Mike McMullen -- Woodwinds

Mike McMullen is a professionally working musician with over 45 years in performance and education. His beginnings playing clarinet in school bands quickly became a lifelong study of music. He studied saxophone with Joe Henderson, flute with Mong Pil Kim, composition and arranging with Dick Grove on a NARAS Scholarship, and studio woodwinds with Phil Sobel. As an educator, past roles include work with Mondavi Center jazz education, Director of Jazz Ensembles at UC Davis, adjunct instruction at ARC, founding and directing the Newpark Jazz Program in Dublin, Ireland, and 3 years on staff at the Dick Grove School in Los Angeles. In performance Mike spent much of the 1980’s touring and recording in a Brazilian jazz collaboration with vocalist Ellen Demos, and with 4in1, the first truly modern jazz group in Ireland. More recently he spent 17 years as a founding member of the Capital Jazz Project in Sacramento. In addition to his work with the Jazz Studies program at Sac State, Mike currently leads his own jazz groups, collaborates on intriguing creative projects, performs with the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra, and works in the pit with Broadway Sacramento. Mike’s most recent recording, Picture Book, was released in March 2018. Aside from his work as a leader, Mike has worked with a long list of jazz and commercial artists. Personal favorites include Dave Liebman, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, Moacir Santos, Bobby Shew, Sonny Fortune, Doc Severinsen, Natalie Cole, Bobby Hutcherson, Kenny Wheeler, and The Moody Blues.
