Kirsten Price

I grew up in the White Mountains of northeastern Arizona, and was fortunate to have a wonderful music teacher who inspired me with her beautiful flute tone, musicality, and joyful approach to music making. I received my Bachelor of Music from Arizona State, married my husband and moved to California (San Diego then Sacramento in '99). We have four children who all graduated from Bella Vista High School. I earned my Master of Music Education degree from Sacramento State in 2008 and taught elementary classroom music and band/choir for the San Juan district for a total of 16 years, retiring in June 2021. I have taught flute and piano lessons from elementary school age to adults. While getting my MM degree at Sac State I became interested in the Native American flute, getting my start with a lesson from local Grammy award winning Native American flutist Mary Youngblood, and eventually wrote my thesis on teaching improvisation on the Native flute. Like my first music teacher, my aim in teaching is to inspire my students to find joy in music making. In lessons this means that it's not just about reading the notes on the page, it's discovering how to turn those printed notes into beauty and musical expression. Teaching the fundamentals is an important aspect of this, as that is how students gain the tools for use in musical expression. I teach the musicianship skills of theory, tone, technique, and solo repertoire, with a sprinkling of improvisation for fun. I aim to help the students become independent learners through problem solving, self-reflection, and learning the "how" and "why" of practicing. Students will have the opportunity to perform in studio celebratory recitals at least once a year. I feel that performing is important because it gives students a chance to share what they have learned, set and accomplish goals, and enjoy a supportive community experience. I teach beginner-advanced flute, beginner-intermediate piano, and beginner Native American flute. To schedule a lesson email Lessons@timsbis.com
