Steve Kohlbacher -- Trombone

Steve received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where he studied trombone with the late Emory B. Remington. After Eastman he spent one year touring with the Woody Herman Orchestra and was a part of two recordings with that band: “Thundering Herd” and “Feelin’ So Blue”. After moving to California, he spent several summers as a tenured member of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra in New Mexico and would then return to the Bay Area at the end of each season where he would regularly perform with the San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Ballet, Opera San Jose, San Jose Symphony and American Musical Theater of San Jose as well as many other orchestras and ensembles. He was a member of the highly acclaimed Full Faith & Credit Big Band for 13 years and also one of Northern California’s foremost brass quintets, The Vintage Brass Ensemble. He resided in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 30 years and then San Diego for four years where he was a member of Ira Liss’ Big Band Jazz Machine, a local musical theater company and the Bone-a-fied Brass trombone choir. A job opportunity took him to Santa Barbara in 2010 where he kept busy with the 805Brass!!! (a brass quintet with two saxophones replacing the French horn and tuba), the Ojai Pops Orchestra and a very fun cover band called Soul Expressions playing the music of Chicago, Tower of Power, Earth Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, James Brown and a whole lot of Latin Jazz. Steve became a full time resident of the Sacramento area in 2019 after pursuing a dual career as an active professional freelance musician for more than 47 years and as an IC Layout Designer in the semiconductor industry for 38 years. Now retired from the chip industry he can finally focus full time on what he loves most, playing a wide variety of music while continuing to study the art of playing the trombone. Teaching Philosophy: I teach my students the art and love of playing music using the trombone as their voice. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or a budding professional, each student has a different set of goals and aspirations that they are striving to attain when signing up for lessons. To that end I commit to partnering with you, the individual, to achieve those goals in a positive and rewarding fashion.
