Care of Your Rental Violin / Viola
Congratulations on choosing the violin or the viola! We're excited for you to start on your musical journey! Here are some tips to help you take care of your string instrument. If you have any other questions or concerns, visit our shop and speak to a technician! We'll be happy to help you out.
- To remove the instrument from the case, firmly grab the neck with your left hand and bottom of instrument with your right hand and lift directly up.
- If the bow is not producing sound, apply more rosin to the hair.
- Skin, no matter how clean, will leave oil on the horsehair, which can ruin it: do not touch the horsehair with your fingers.
- The screw on the bottom of the bow should be used to tighten the horsehair for playing and to loosen the horsehair for storage. The bow should not be stored with tight horsehair as changes in temperature can cause the bow to warp which can cause the horsehair to rip out.
